Core Values and Guiding Principles

Core Values

We are a community-based political action club promoting an exchange of ideas with the purpose of effecting political change. We honor the intelligence and diversity of our communities and we understand that through activism and community organizing, we build a powerful movement that makes a difference in the political landscape and in our lives.

We believe that many of the problems in LGBTST People of Color communities are the result of the inequitable distribution of resources, power, and access, perpetuated by misguided government policies, apathy and indifference. We are especially impacted by inequities in health care, education, and housing. At the same time our civil liberties continue to be eroded by inadequate responses to immigration and terrorism which have resulted in increased policing, surveillance, and incarceration.

We believe in a society that values the dignity of all people. Inherent in this value is the desire to live in a society without racism, homophobia, or any other bias or prejudice that results in any one individual being “less than” any other. Even as we value the individual, we also recognize the importance of community and strive for the collective improvement of the lives of all LGBTST People of Color.

Guiding Principles

The list of principles that follows is intended to be a living document, a reflection of important issues as identified by the club’s membership. We expect the list to evolve and change over time, though the club’s commitment to its mission remains constant. The principles are loosely grouped thematically.

Civil Rights

  • We believe that all discrimination and unequal treatment on the basis of gender, including gender identity and expression, should be eliminated.
  • We believe in sexual autonomy and self-determination and we call for the abolition of sodomy laws and laws that criminalize consensual adult sexual activity.
  • We believe that all couples and families – whether LGBTST or not – should have the same rights and benefits that accrue to married couples and families, including the right to marry, and its economic and immigration benefits.
  • We believe in a woman's right to make her own reproductive choices.
  • We believe in a safe and violence-free society, including our schools.

Social Welfare

  • We believe in a system of universal health care (including reproductive health care, access to condoms, and HIV education) that guarantees equal access regardless of economic or immigration status, including LGBTST youth
  • We believe that all people should be provided the opportunity of a quality public education, regardless of where they live.

Economic Policy

  • We believe government must find resources to address issues disproportionately affecting people of color and to remedy inequities.
  • We believe government should make a greater investment in affordable housing and that homelessness should be eliminated.
  • We believe that all people should have access to jobs at a living wage and to job training, if needed, so that unemployment and underemployment are eliminated.
  • We believe in a progressive tax system in which wealthy individuals and corporations pay their fair share of taxes.

Criminal Justice

  • We believe in the abolition of the death penalty
  • We believe in fair and just policing practices, and we call for elimination of racial profiling, police brutality, unnecessary government surveillance, and negative police presence in communities of color.
  • We believe that this country should reduce its over-reliance on incarceration
    Foreign Policy
  • We believe in a world at peace and a US foreign policy informed by an enlightened sense of a global commonwealth.
